Bukit Lutut Expedition 09-15-16dec09


A group of Adventurer from SEV with equally 4 adventurer Back Packer from Denmark & a veteran Adventurer organiser from France.

6 hours of trekking from easy secondary forest, river crossing to pristine rainforest and finally steep 70-80 degree climb to the submit. Even veteran villager got muscle clamp.

We covered a distance of 5 km, Commended by the French man who travel around Borneo & the Danish guy who has been travellling around south East Asia & around the world.

New trekking tour SEV 06A

Day one Sumbiling Eco village-SEV / Bukit Lutut Peak for overnight ( L/D)

8.00 am meet at Kianggeh Jetty (Bandar Seri Begawan) and take a 45 minutes public boat ride to Bangar. Bangar provides a last opportunity to purchase camera batteries, personal drinking water (100 plus), energy bars etc.

Then proceed 20 mins by vehicle to Sumbiling Eco village. Morning tea will be served and the expedition leader will give a briefing. Then trekkers cross the Temburong River by boat and begin trekking on a gentle slope covered with secondary forest to the Mutong River. The track will involve criss-crossing the pristine Mutong River. You should be prepared to walk in wet shoes. You will be rewarded with the sight of the beautiful Mutong River, untouched primary rainforest (one of the best in Borneo), hundred year old vines, huge trees, occasional hornbills calling & many other delights. Some of the plants and insects are yet to be named by scientists! After a nice 1 hour trek we will reach Mutong Camp One. Here we will stop for lunch to keep up our energy level. There is time for a swim, to relax or enjoy the photographic opportunities.

After fully rest, we will hike up to Bukit Lutut. As we move further into the thick rainforest, the slope will become steeper & steeper. Some sections of track may require us to use our hands to hoist our bodies up. Occasionally gibbons make their distinct calls as if laughing at us. Hikers with binoculars might be able to see some birds & gibbons. After about 3hr uphill trek we will reach Camp 2. After a brief rest continue trek to the peak of Bukit Lutut to view the sunset (weather permitting). We will set up camp and eat together in camp style, entertained by an orchestra of various frogs, crickets, cicadas and other insects. After dinner, the surroundings can be explored for insects or nocturnal creatures (again weather permitting).

Day Two Bukit Lutut Peak and trek down to Mutong Camp /River trek to SEV ( B/L)

Wake up to the call of gibbon followed by the sweet melody created by our birdie friends. Be amaze with a beautiful view of the Rainforest canopy as far as the eye can see. In clear weather you can also see Mulu National park mountain range to the south and Lawas mountain range to the north. After breakfast, break camp and prepare for another day with nature. We are now in a deep jungle. Occasionally the gibbon make their presence felt and hornbills can be seen flying overhead.

Today’s trek is mostly downhill and can be more difficult. After about a 2-3hr trek we will meet the Mutong River again. Here if we are quiet enough, we might see hornbills & other birds at close range. There is an opportunity to take a dip into one of the many river pools. Try out natural Shampoo consist of leaves and many more. Continue trek along the Motong River back to SEV around 1-2pm.

Arrive at SEV, where you can repack your load, have a refreshing shower and change your clothes. Lunch is served before transferring overland to Bangar and by boat back to Bandar Seri Begawan.

Includes: Expedition leader/ guides, all meals, land transfer in Temburong, and boat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan.

Excludes: Porter for carrying personal back pack( B$45/day max 10 kg or B$90 for whole 2days1nights trip) you need to carry your own drinking water,Camp for sleeping, sleeping bag & Snack along the way. ( if you like to hire camp B$25/2 man camp and sleeping bag B$10 each, please inform while you confirm your tour)

We highly recommend you hire a porter to carry your bag so that you can fully enjoy your trekking expedition

What to expect :

Bukit Lutut can be very challenging hill to climb, it is only 500 plus meter and approximately 5km from Sumbiling Eco Village. Only recommend for people with reasonable fit and loves nature. Not recommend for child under 10 years.

As an outdoor trip, itinerary and times indicated are subject to change without notice, as trips may be affected by rain, heat, high or low water levels in the river. covered site will be provided for answering calls of nature. Meals will be served with army type rations with food such as canned curry chicken, baked beans, corned beef etc with rice. It is recommended that you bring your own high energy bar eg. mixed fruit bar. Hot water will be available for coffee or tea.

Recommended to wear :

Light, easy to dry shorts & t shirts during trekking, light trekking shoes with good grip, a favorite cap to cover your head, face towel for those who sweat a lot.

Evening wear - light, easy to dry long pants, socks, light cotton long sleeve shirt and a pair of sandals or thongs.

Recommended to Bring :

Light rucksack, changes of clothes, sun lotion, hat, raincoat, camera, binoculars (only if you are bird watcher), small towel for the walk, towel + toiletries, swimsuit , insect repellent- non aerosol type, tiger balm will do. A small flashlight or head torch. A change of clothes and towel for use on return to Sumbiling village.

Some snacks like energy bars e.g mixed fruit bars, chocolate, sweets and drinks (any isotonic drink or packets of oral rehydration salts) in case you get hungry and thirsty en route.

IMPORTANT! Please limit your back pack to 5-7 kg depending on your fitness, if heavier you might consider hiring a porter to carry your stuff. It is B$90 for a 2days 1night trip, max 10kg.

Rules of the Rainforest :

Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints. Bring back nothing but memories

Please Don’t Bring: Suitcases, radios or loud sounding devices.

Bukit Lutut Expedition - Description& itinerary

Day one               Sumbiling Eco village / Lutut camp 1 (D)

2.00 pm Meet at Kianggeh Jetty (Bandar Seri Begawan) and take a 45 minutes public boat ride to Bangar.  Bangar provides a last opportunity to purchase camera batteries, personal drinking water (100 plus), energy bars etc. 

 

Then proceed 20 mins by vehicle to Sumbiling Eco village.  Welcome tea will be served upon arrival .  Reorganize your backpack if you hire a porter to carry it. Make sure stuff inside your back pack is water proofed. Expedition leader will give briefing on Do & don’t before your Bukit Lutut Expedition start. 1st  trekkers will need to cross the Temburong River by boat and begin trekking on a gentle slope covered with secondary forest to the Mutong River. Part of your trek is to walk across  the Mutong River a couple of times. Expect to get wet. Water normally reach your kneel deep and sometimes reach your waist. You should be prepared to walk in wet shoes. You will be rewarded with the sight of the beautiful Mutong River, untouched primary rainforest (one of the best in Borneo), hundred year old vines, huge trees, occasional hornbills calling & many other delights. Some of the plants and insects are yet to be named by scientists! After a nice 1-2 hours trek we will reach Lutut Camp One before sunset.

Upon arrival, settle down with your camp. Bath & relax at the river. Guide and porter will prepare your dinner. You are welcome to help up in the cooking. Dinner will be simple, army ration type. Canned food, rice and noodle.  Night activities will be Night walk along the river to search for nortunal creature like frog, insect etc. ( Weather permit)

 

Day Two               Bukit Lutut Summit/ Lutut Camp 3  ( B/L/D)

 

Wake up by the sweet melody created by our birdie friends & Insect. After breakfast, break camp and prepare another day with nature. After fully recharge, we will hike up to Bukit Lutut. As we move further into the thick rainforest,slope will be steeper & steeper, range 15-50 degree angle. On some section of track, you will need to use your hand to pull your body up. Occasionally jungle wild birds make their distinct call as if  laughing at us. If you bring along a binocular, you might be able to see some birds & Gibbon.  After about 3 hrs uphill trek  we will reach Lutut Camp Two. Here take a break before continue trek to the peak of Bukit Lutut to have a  view of Mulu National park, Limbang & Lawas of Malaysia. Back from Peak, stop for lunch at Lutut camp 2. After lunch continue down to Mutong junction. Here onward, the journey down become more remote, expedition type where our ranger will cut through the way to make a path. after 1 hour or two we will reach Mutong River. Another hour or two trek on Mutong River will reach Lutut camp 3 for overnight .  Free & leisure till time for dinner.Swimming , fishing are activities of the day at campsite. Night activities will be either exploring surrounding jungle for nortunal wildlife like frog, insect etc . ( weather permit).

 

Day Three           Trek out to Temburong River ( B/L)

Wakeup by the sweet melody of birds and occasional call by Gibbon. Enjoy your 2nd morning at remote jungle. Today, relax enjoy your breakfast by the river bank. Maximize your time spend in this pristine rainforest. Easy River trek & swim  along Mutong river to Sumbiling Eco Village. Freshen up and have  lunch before back to civilization.Transfer overland to Bangar and by boat back to Bandar Seri Begawan.

Itinerary

Day one        Sumbiling Eco village / Lutut camp 1 (D)

 

2.00 pm                Meet & greet at Kianggeh Jetty for boat to Bangar, Temburong

3.00 pm                Arrive Bangar and depart by car/Van to Sumbiling Eco village

3.30 pm                Arrive Sumbiling Eco village & repack/ reorganize backpack for porter.

4.00 pm                Prepare to cross Temburong River by Temuai and start trek to Lutut Camp 1

6.00 pm                Arrive at Lutut Camp 1. Set up Camp & get ready for the evening

0730 pm               Night activities- Fishing, BBQ, River trekking etc

10.00pm               Good night        

      

Day Two               Bukit Lutut Summit/ Lutut Camp 3  ( B/L/D)

 

 

0700 am               Wake up, breakfast

0830 am               Depart Lutut Camp 1 to Lutut camp 2 with Guide & a porter. Other porter will go direct to Lutut Camp 3 to set up for the night.

1030 am               Arrive at Lutut Camp 2. Ranger & a porter will get ready for our lunch.

1100 am               Depart for final ascent to Bukit Lutut Peak.

1200 noon           Arrive at Bukit Lutut peak

1230 pm               Descent back to Lutut Camp 2 for lunch

1.00pm                 Depart Lutut Camp 2 for Keching Water fall

2.30 pm                Arrive at Keching waterfall . Photo opportunity.

2.45 pm                Continue trek along Mutong River to Lutut Camp 3

4.00 pm                Arrive at Lutut Camp 3. Relax and enjoy the environment. Activities, swimming at “ Labok”, fishing, lay trap for wildlife, lay fishing net “ Jarat” etc 

0700 pm               Dinner ready, Camp fire, BBQ fish.. Night activities, night fishing, spotlighting wildlife etc

10.00 pm              Call it a night for early sleeper.

 

Day Three           Trek out to Temburong River ( B/L)

 

0900 am               Depart Lutut camp 3

1100 am               Arrive at Sumbiling Eco Village, shower,  and enjoy a hot coffee & Tea.

                                Lunch at Sumbiling Eco Village

1.00 pm                Depart overland back to Bangar and by boat back to Kianggeh jetty,BSB.

2.30 pm                Arrive back to Kianggeh jetty. Back home with fond memories of Bukit Lutut Expedition.
